Application

Anhydrous chromium chloride is an important precursor for the low temperature synthesis of anhydrous metal sulfides, nitrides, phosphides, etc. It is also an important precursor for the synthesis of chromium containing mixed metal complexes; example lithium chromium chloride (Li2CrCl4), which shows rapid lithium ion conduction.

Anhydrous chromium chloride finds applications as catalysts, chromizing ferrous metals, steel, etc. The vapor-phase co-reductions with other metal halides by hydrogen results in finely divided intermetallics with applications as structural materials or compounds with useful thermoelectric, magnetic, and oxidation-resistance properties.

Chromium chloride powder is air and water sensitive. Beads have lower surface area and pour easily.

A new series of transition-metal oxyhalides (MCl)LaNb(2)O(7) (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co) have been prepared by a simple topochemical route. Layered perovskite hosts (ALaNb(2)O(7), A = Li, Na, K or Rb) were reacted with the corresponding anhydrous metal halides
