General description
The phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is a zwitterionic phospholipid. Its headgroup is provided with a phosphate, that is negatively charged and a free amine, that is positively charged. PE is one of the widely distributed glycerophospholipid in eukaryotic cells.
Application
Egg NBD PE is suitable to use as an additive in dimethylformamide (DMF) to compare the effects of nystatin on the diffusion of NBD-Nys and NBD-PE. It has also been used to monitor lipid extraction from liposomes for lipid transfer assay.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) helps to activate factor (F)X and PT, thereby stimulating thrombosis. It serves as an anticoagulant. PE is essential for the surface expression of γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABAARs) in cultured neurons.
