General description

Membrane-permeable yellow dye that is reduced by mitochondrial reductases in living cells to form the dark blue product, MTT-formazan. Spectrophotometric measurement of MTT-formazan at 540 or 570 nm allows quantitation of cell viability. Used as a direct indicator of cytotoxicity (such as for screening cancer drugs) and apoptosis. An electron acceptor used for studying NADP-dependent dehydrogenases.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cell permeable: yes
Primary Target
Used as a direct indicator of cytotoxicity and apoptosis.
Product does not compete with ATP.
Reversible: no

Preparation Note

Following reconstitution, aliquot and freeze (-20°C.). Stock solutions are stable for up to 1 month at -20°C.
