General description
S1P lyase is an important enzyme in lipid, steroid, and ceramide metabolism. S1P lyase 1 specifically cleaves phosphorylated sphingoid bases such as sphingosine-1-phosphate into fatty aldehydes and phosphoethanolamine. S1P lyase also plays roles in apoptosis with regards to regulation of ceramide production and plays roles in cell differentiation via its role in androgen and estrogen metabolism as well as that of other important lipids and bioactive lipid derivatives. S1P lyase is expressed in the endoplasmic reticulum in many cells. Interestingly, because Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a bioactive sphingolipid that promotes cardiomyocyte survival and contributes to ischemic preconditioning, its catabolism by S1P lyase is very important in recovery from heart attacks or other ischemia related events, and thus S1P lyase is being examined as a potential new therapeutic target for reperfusion therapy in heart disease.

Liver regeneration is an extremely complicated process that is regulated by a number of signaling pathways. Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), a potent bioactive lipid mediator playing crucial roles in various cellular responses through its receptors, has been attracting attention in the

In addition to potent agonist properties for sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptors, intracellularly, S1P is an intermediate in metabolic conversion pathway from sphingolipids to glycerolysophospholipids (glyceroLPLs). We hypothesized that this S1P metabolism and its products might possess some novel roles in
