General description
Secondary antibody specific for Human Immunoglobulin M
Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is a highly conserved antibody in vertebrates and is expressed early during development of immune system. It is present as a pentamer in the serum and is secreted by peritoneal B cells.

Biochem/physiol Actions
Immunoglobulin M (IgM) plays a key role in engulfing the apoptotic cells. The reduction in serum IgM levels leads to increased autoimmune response and a higher risk of infections. IgM exhibits polyreactive and autoreactive functionality. A defect in IgM production is observed in X-linked agammaglobulinemia.
Specific for Human IgM. No cross reactivity with human IgA, IgD, IgE or IgG.

Immunoglobulins are heterodimeric proteins composed of 2 heavy and 2 light chains. They can be separated functionally into variable domains that bind antigens and constant domains that specify effector functions, such as activation of complement or binding to Fc receptors.

The existence of IgM has been known for more than a century, but its importance in immunity and autoimmunity continues to emerge. Studies of mice deficient in secreted IgM have provided unexpected insights into its role in several diverse processes
