Gene Information

human ... IL2RA(3559)

General description

IL2RA (interleukin 2 receptor subunit α) gene codes for interleukin-2 receptor α-chain CD25. CD25 is expressed on activated T-cells. The activated T-cells liberate this molecule in the form of a soluble variant (referred to as soluble IL-2 receptor; sIL-2R) from the cell membrane into the circulation. The CD25 gene is located on human chromosome 10p15. The gene spans a length of 48kb with eight exons.
Interleukin-2 receptor subunit alpha, also known as CD25, is a type I transmembrane protein and the alpha chain of the IL-2 receptor. CD25 and CD122 form a heterodimer to act as a high-affinity receptor for IL-2. CD25 is expressed on activated T cells, activated B cells, some thymocytes, myeloid precursors, oligodendrocytes, and most B cell neoplasms, some acute nonlymphocytic leukemias, neuroblastomas, and tumor infiltrating lymphocytes.

Immunogen

Synthetic peptide derived from the C-terminus of human CD25 protein.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a cytokine that is essential in modulating activation, proliferation, and survival of several T-cell subsets. IL2RA gene has been associated with susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS).
