聚乙二醇（PEG）是一种亲水性的聚合物。它可以通过环氧乙烷的阴离子开环聚合而被轻易的合成为不同的分子量和并带有各种端基。当交联成网络时，PEG可具有高的含水量，形成“水凝胶”。水凝胶的形成可通过电离辐射交联PEG或通过PEG大分子单体与反应性链端的共价交联而引发。PEG引其不会触发免疫反应而成为一种适合于生物学应用的材料。

应用

它已用于修饰治疗性蛋白质和肽以增加其溶解度。
光聚合的PEG水凝胶在制备用于包封细胞的生物活性和免疫隔离屏障方面具有新兴的应用。
